In a perfect world, a person would never have the need for an attorney. However, we don’t live in a perfect world. In fact, it seems that individuals are findings themselves involved in legal matters much more frequently. With the rise in the frequency of legal matters, individuals often find themselves wanting a change in representation for a variety of reasons. Yet, these individuals may be hesitant in doing so, again, for a variety of reasons. There are generally two types of individuals that call our office about taking over a case. The first is the pro se individual. When a person is “pro se” that means that the person is representing himself or herself, without the assistance of an attorney. Individuals who began their case without the representation of an attorney oftentimes find the procedural component of law to be overwhelming. This is understandable, but it causes many pro se individuals to later seek out assistance from an attorney.
The second type of individual we receive calls from are those individuals that are unhappy with the job their current attorney is doing. There are a variety of reasons why an individual may be unhappy with their current representation, such as the attorney is rude, the attorney fails to communicate with you, the attorney does not listen to your input, or the attorney fails to keep you informed. Whatever the reason may be, you have a right to be happy and pleased with the attorney you hire to represent you in your matter.
Individuals looking for a change of representation often wonder about the effects it may have on their case. Many may be hesitant to make a change because they feel it may hurt their case, push their case back, or cost additional money. However, switching representation after your legal matter has commenced will not have a negative effect on your matter, nor should it cost you any extra money. Importantly, these concerns should not prevent you from seeking new representation if you are currently unpleased. When you hire someone to do a job, you have certain expectations. While you may not expect perfection, it is certainly fair to expect a certain level of competency and respect. If you feel you are not receiving that from your current representation, it is more than fair to seek someone new.
Finding the right attorney can be a challenging task at times. But it is important to remember that you have the right to an attorney that is dedicated to your case and an attorney that you feel comfortable and confident in.
